Fighting Hunger Two by Two
Beginning
Feb. 22, 2004, Social Ministry kicked-off a fund-raising
project for Heifer International. Our goal was to purchase an
Ark at the cost of $5,000.
Update:
June, 2004
We achieved our goal of $5000 for an Ark. Through
the dedicated participation of our Sunday School classes, youth and members,
we have raised over $4000. ALL has agreed to match our funds up to $1000. That
brings our
total raised to $5000. We are able to help provide sustenance and meaning
to the
lives of people all over the world. Thank you for all you have done. |
As many of you know, Heifer International is an organization
that sends animals and seedlings overseas to communities that
face hunger and a life of little financial
income. The gifts of farm animals are ongoing sources of food and income for
families. The family receiving an animal must participate in training in how
to care for that animal and provide appropriate facilities to house the animal.
Everyone who receives a Heifer cow, goat, llama, rabbits or other animals,
agrees to pass on one of the animal’s offspring
to another family in their community. Heifer International
has helped
more than five million families become self-reliant.
To achieve our goal of funding an Ark, Social Ministry has invited
each Sunday School class to select and sponsor an animal, by
collecting funds during Lent.
There will also be a visual display set up in the Narthex where groups, individuals,
or families may donate money to buy an animal or part of an animal. As a culminating
activity, Jessie Queior along with some members of SNL and the youth choir,
will organize a walk-a-thon which will be held on April 18th. This “walk” will
be held in the lower church parking lot and will be run similar to
our CROP Walk. Walkers and sponsors will be invited to participate. Your gift
of an animal sets in motion a chain of events that changes
people’s
lives. One gift turns into many, as more and more lives are transformed through
Heifer’s cornerstone of passing on the gift.
